Lead qualification questions by industry
Qualifying a lead means learning enough about the visitor's need to answer well and tell whether they're a fit — without making them fill out a form inside a chat window. Done well, it saves both sides time and raises the quality of every conversation. Done badly, it's the fastest way to make a visitor close the tab.
The trick is restraint: visitors came to get answers, not to give them. Ask only what you genuinely need — one question at a time, and always explain why.
How to ask without pestering
- Ask at most three or four questions before you give something back — an answer, a quote, a booking.
- Tell them why you're asking. “So I can quote you accurately,” “So I can check availability.” A reason makes any question feel fair.
- One question at a time. A wall of bullets reads as paperwork; one question reads as a conversation.
- End every exchange with a next step. The visitor should always know what happens after they answer.
- Don't ask what you won't use. Every question you ask costs a little goodwill.

Home services
Home-services leads live or die on scope: a small repair, a whole project, or a quote chase? A useful first exchange:
- What's the job — repair, install, or a new project?
- Roughly how big is it (number of rooms, items, or area)?
- Are you on a timeline — is there a date it needs done by?
- Do you have a budget range in mind?
- Where is the property, so we can confirm we cover the area?
Skip size and budget questions for small jobs — a dripping tap doesn't need a survey before you'll answer.
Salons and spas
Booking hangs on the service, the timing, and whether they've been before:
- What service are you interested in, and is this your first visit?
- Do you have a preferred date, or are you flexible?
- Anything I should know — hair type, skin concerns, sensitivities — so we match you with the right person?
Nobody needs their full history to book a haircut — ask only what the recommendation actually needs.
Real estate
Real-estate chats fizzle fast when you can't tell whether they're buying, selling, or browsing:
- Are you buying, selling, renting, or just getting a feel for the market?
- Which area or areas are you interested in?
- What's your timeline — weeks, months, or just exploring?
- Do you have a budget range in mind?
- Is this your first time buying or selling?
For sellers, add: are you listing soon, and what kind of property? These answers decide whether you hand over listings, a valuation, or an honest “we don't cover that area.”
Wellness
Wellness leads need a match, not a sales pitch — the goal is pairing the visitor with the right session or practitioner:
- What are you hoping to get out of it — stress relief, mobility, recovery, general health?
- Have you worked with a practitioner before, or is this new to you?
- Are there health considerations we should keep in mind for the match?
- How soon would you like to start?
- Do you have a pricing or insurance question we can answer first?
Keep health questions general and optional. You're gathering enough to match them well, not building a medical file in a chat window.
Agencies
Agency conversations are about scope, timing, and fit — the visitor is often comparing a few providers at once:
- What do you need — a new website, marketing, branding, or something else?
- What's the project or problem you're trying to solve?
- Do you have a timeline in mind?
- What's your rough budget range?
- Who would we be working with, and do you have existing materials or a site?
Agencies often win by being honest about fit: a quick “that's smaller than our usual projects — here's a better option” builds more trust than chasing any lead to the end.
Turn answers into a reply
The point of asking is a better answer, not a stored form. Once you have the detail, respond with the concrete next step — the quote, the booking, the listings — and say what happens next. If they're not a fit, say so kindly; a polite mismatch beats a wasted hour on both sides.
